Overview of our study programs

From the Bachelor's program, over one of our Master's programs to the doctorate: the complete spectrum of academic education is offered at our Physics Department.

With a Bachelor's degree in Physics at the Physics Department all possibilities are open to you. You may choose on of the classic Master programs in Physics or one of our interdisciplinary options where you study and research at the frontiers of Physics to neighboring disciplines together with students who did their Bachelor in neighboring subjects. In all cases a Master's degree from the Physics Department enables you for a qualified job in almost all areas or perfectly prepares you for your next step into science with a Ph. D.

Events for Youngsters

If you cannot start your studies since you are still working on your higher education entrance qualification (e. g. the Abitur) we have several events for information and special offers.

Finally with your application to our Bachelor program Physics we invite you to participate in our mathematical prep-course just before studying starts. This is a great opportunity not only to freshen up your maths skills from school but also to get to know your fellow students and get accustomed with university life.

Bachelor Program Physics

You have received your higher education entrance qualification and have sufficient German language skills and would like to study Physics? We would be very happy to welcome you in our German language Bachelor program Physics. Apart from a well founded basic education you will receive a deeper view into one of our areas of concentration you can freely choose during your study. Did you know: with a complete and in-time application you are guaranteed to be accepted!

Elite-Master program Theoretical and Mathematical Physics

You have an outstanding Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Physics and would like to understand the models describing our world on very large and very small scales using the universal language of Mathematics in theoretical Physics? You will benefit from an unparalleled broad offering in courses at the highest level in the Elite-Master program Theoretical and Mathematical Physics – offered together with LMU and embedded in the framework of Elite-network of Bavaria.

You may find detailed information on the contents and description of application and admission on the websites of the Elite-Master program Theoretical and Mathematical Physics.

Ph. D. in Physics

"Direct Track" Option in all our Master Programs

In each of our Master’s programs students are guided to do scientific research in the respective area of Physics on their own. This is a perfect first step for starting a Ph.  D.

Talented students can continue the Master's research phase seamlessly with a doctoral project, speeding up their academic career. The "Direct Track" combines the advantages of the traditional model with the speed of a "Fast Track" – without the disadvantages like a (formally) missing Master’s degree.

But the system is flexible and adapts to your interests. With your Master’s degree you can change your research topic and research group as well and follow the traditional path to a Ph. D. as well.

Ph. D. Program and TUM Graduate School

You are finishing your Master’s degree and seek to obtain the highest academic degree of Dr. rer. nat. during a Ph. D. project? The research campus in Garching offers the chance for a dissertation on the highest level – in whatever specific area of Physics you want.

At Physics Department you become a member of the Department Graduate Center Physics and henceforth of TUM Graduate School. This provides the organisational framework for the doctorate with a flexible program to support your research.
