Curriculum in the Bachelor’s program Physics for students beginning before October 2020

Our Bachelor is a science-oriented program, which provides students with a solid educational background in physics. After a common fundamentals phase during the first four semesters, follows the individual specialization in the last year.

Our German-taught program provides our students with a very stong theoretical and experimental basis in physics, enabling them to continue their education in one of our consecutive Master programs and deal with current research topics. Beyond this option, our Bachelor program also highly qualifies students for many other disciplines at TUM.

Fundamentals Phase (Semester 1 to 4)

During the first four semesters, all our Bachelor students take the same core courses in mathematics, experimental physics, theoretical physics, chemistry and informatics.

A unique feature offered by our deparment is the mentoring program for Bachelor students. Each of our professors has a small group of mentees, being their contact person in any question related to their studies and beyond.

Specialization Phase (Semester 5 and 6)

During the fifth and sixth semester, the general education is completed and a first focus in the studies is set. The possible specializations correspond to the four consecutive Master programs offered in the deparment, which also reflect the research topics in physics at Campus Garching:

  • Nuclear, Particle and Astrophysics (KTA),
  • Condensed Matter Physics (KM),
  • Biophysics (BIO) and
  • Applied and Engineering Physics (AEP).

The structure of all four curricula is similar and ensures that besides this first specialization all graduates qualify for all our consecutive Master programs.
