additional remarks This FOPRA is aimed to give students a basic introduction into scanning electron microscopy and a basic training experience in surface structure analysis. The students will become familiar with a modern scanning electron microscope (SEM) of the model “Axia ChemiSEM” from Thermo Fischer Scientific. The key principles of electron microscopy and its contrast to light microscopy will be discussed. The advantages and limits of the information gained by secondary electrons (SE), backscattered electrons (BSE), X-rays produced by the interaction of the electron beam with the sample material will be experienced in practice with samples chosen to highlight the different aspects of this method. Each student will practice navigating a typical SEM program, comparing the fit of electron beam energy for different applications, improving the quality and focus of the images, interpreting both the information from electron-signal derived images and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).
