Beam collimation and resolution samples for a longitudinal neutron resonant spin echo spectrometer

The neutron spin echo spectrometer RESEDA (Resonance Spin Echo for Diverse Applications) is dedicated to the exploration of slow dynamics and fluctuations in hard and soft condensed matter systems.

 As for many other neutron scattering techniques it is necessary to perform a resolution measurement using the same experimental configuration that was used for data acquisition. To minimize the time required for the resolution measurement the resolution sample needs to be chosen carefully. Different materials (e.g.: C, V…) and different sample structures (e.g.: powder, single crystal) are suitable for different Q-ranges.

 Part of this Bachelor project consists of measuring the different existing resolution samples, and mapping out which sample is most suitable for which Q-range. After analyzing this data, additional, optimized resolution samples may be designed and measured. The second part of this project consists of the design and implementation of a translation stage for the collimator at RESEDA, which offers three different collimation settings. This includes technical drawings, the mechanical set-up of the stage as well as its integration into the NICOS instrument software.
