He supervises his PhD students intensively, advises the new Scientific Director of the FRM II, Prof. Dr. Peter Müller-Buschbaum, and gets involved with the public relations work of the FRM II.

As Emeritus of Excellence, Winfried Petry will give a talk in the Tech-Histories Alive series on 29 January 2019, at 18.30 h, at the Vorhoelzer Forum, Munich.

Emeriti of Excellence

Since 2006, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has been bestowing the honorary title of “TUM Emeriti of Excellence” on selected retired professors for their outstanding achievements and distinguished service to TUM. The advice of these retired academics is valued particularly highly because of their personal autonomy, vast experience and outstanding reputation in the scientific community. They also underpin TUM’s diversity strategy – adding value by valuing all age groups as transition to a more intergenerational university.

New honorees are selected once a year, taking the following criteria into account: academic excellence in research and teaching, a commitment to the development of TUM, a strong public profile and an extensive network of contacts. A list of candidates is first examined by a committee and then submitted to the President for a decision.

Currently there are 67 former professors holding the honorary title. This year, three professors have been selected: apart from Winfried Petry also Prof. Dr. Leo van Hemmen from the Physics Department and Prof. Dr. Hermann Auernhammer (TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan) have been honoured.
