Alessio Zaccone becomes professor for "Theory of soft matter"

2014-07-22 – News from Physics Department

Alessio Zaccone has been appointed as assistant professor for Theory of soft matter. He is jointly appointed by the Physik-Department and TUM’s Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) as a “Rudolf Mößbauer Tenure Track Professor”.

Research

The research of Alessio Zaccone aims to understand the relationship between molecular interactions and the dynamical collective behaviour of condensed matter systems, including macroscopic and transport properties. Modern methods of theoretical physics are used, backed by computer simulations, to obtain insights into the mechanical and electrical response, the morphology and the phase transition behaviour of disordered atomic and molecular solids (e.g. metallic glasses, amorphous polymers etc.), colloidal suspensions and other complex fluids, and biomolecular self-assembling systems. All these systems are important in many industrial and technological applications, from advanced materials to pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

Biography

Alessio Zaccone (b. 1981) studied at Politecnico di Torino and completed his MSc thesis at Technische Universität Berlin. After obtaining a PhD in chemical physics at ETH Zurich (Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences), he worked as a post-doctoral researcher and as an Oppenheimer Research Fellow in physics at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge.
