additional remarks The characterization of soft, biological materials requires different techniques than the characterization of hard, inorganic materials. Almost every biological material shows a viscoelastic material behavior, i.e., they combine elastic and viscous characteristics. Moreover, the surfaces of biological materials are often very complex with roughness on different length scales (macro-, micro-, and nano-roughness). Such surfaces show a wide range of tribological behavior when biological, macromolecular lubricants are employed on them. In this lab course, the students will perform selected experiments, in which the complex material behavior of mucosal systems (i.e., mucin solutions, surface-attached mucin coatings, and mucin hydrogels) can be studied. The characterization methods used here quantify the viscoelastic, tribological, and selective properties of different biological materials. The experiments are divided into four parts: 1. Generation of macromolecular coatings 2. Rotational tribology 3. Cell culture & microscopy 4. Spectroscopy
