additional remarks The two-week laboratory block course deals with the preparation and electrical characterization of nanometer-thin biomolecular films. The topic is highly interdisciplinary, covering aspects of electrical engineering, physics, chemistry and molecular biology. In this context, the scientific challenges and potential technological applications will be discussed. The course will begin with an introduction to biomolecules, their chemical structure and the relevant charge transport theory. A briefing on the experimental fabrication and characterization techniques, such as chemical self-assembly, microfabrication and electrical measurements, will also be held. The students will then practice the above in the laboratory, guided by scientific staff. More specifically, they will: 1. prepare substrates and chemically modify their surface via self-assembly, 2. grow biomolecular films, comprising proteins (e.g. bacteriorhodopsin), smaller polypeptides or oligonucleotides 3. characterize the films with respect to wettability, thickness and morphology via water contact angle, atomic force microscopy and spectral ellipsometry measurements, 4. perform electrical transport measurements by means of a eutectic GaIn or Hg top contact, and 5. analyze and interpret the measured current-voltage characteristics.
