Further Information

additional remarks Application oriented course that starts with the practical knowledge needed to be able to move around the operating room (OR), as well as the background for four selected clinical applications. Then it goes back to the theory of medical augmented reality, surgical robotics and intraoperative imaging and navigation. Participants will be divided in groups of 3 in order to apply the newly acquired knowledge for the evaluation of a particular surgery with the goal of detecting problems and proposing a technological solution to solve those. The results will be discussed with the tutors and presented at the end of the semester. Each student will visit 4 different image-guided surgeries during the semester. Lecture: • Basics of selected medical applications in surgery and interventional radiology • Basics of the operating room (OR clothing, how to move around, what to consider, how to react in particular situations, ...) • Basics of medical augmented reality • Basics of medical robotics • Basics of intra-operative imaging and navigation • Critical analysis of existing interventional imaging and minimal invasive surgery procedures and identification of innovation potential using knowledge of preoperative, diagnostic imaging and interventional navigation techniques. 1. How is the procedure performed at the moment? 2. How is the procedure and associated data recorded and how is the outcome of the procedure documented? 3. How are data/information presented and how is the user interaction? 4. Which tools are used? 5. What is the workflow and the surgical process model? 6. Can the procedure (inlcuding patient and therapy logistics) be improved using imaging, navigation, robotics or augemented reality and their correct representation (quality assurance, safety, speed, ...)?
