"Critical analysis of existing interventional imaging and minimal invasive surgery procedures and identification of innovation potential using knowledge of preoperative, diagnostic imaging and interventional navigation techniques.

Participants learn the basics of medical applications in minimally invasive image guided surgery and interventions. They gain the knowledge to understand the complex medical environment as well as its challenges in order to improve these procedures with the focus on clinical workflow and imaging in the operating theatre of the future. With knowledge about imaging technology and image processing algorithms participants will be able to model and master complex solutions. Besides the medical and technical knowledge, definition of clinical, technical projects in the field of intra operative imaging and navigation for minimal invasive surgery is the core focus during the course. Exposure to real world problems, observing an intervention at our clinical partner sites makes this a unique setup for modeling and implementing creative solutions to improve the care.
By the delivery of the "presentation" the ability is tested to understand a technical/scientific subject, to analyze and evaluate facts and factors of influence, to summarize the subject and present it to an audience, and to stand a discussion about the presented subject. By the written summaries, the ability is tested to summarise the major facts and the conclusion of a presentation in clear and concise manner in a 10-15 pages concept paper.
By the regular discussions the ability to develop an idea from initial thoughts to complete picture within a given timeframe and by delivering milestones.
The final grade is an averaged grade based on attendance and active participation (10%), assignments (10%), the midterm presentation (10%), the final group presentation (15%), the proposal document and project work (35%), and a written examination (60 minutes) on the technology basics (20%). In the written examination students demonstrate by answering questions under time pressure and without helping material the theoretical knowledge of medical imaging and therapy devices, health care systems as well as of the clinical workflow in the operating room.
