Stress-- which parts of words and sentences are stressed and unstressed, including some of the most common patterns of stress/unstress; and aspects of connected speech. Intonation--how speech is divided into speech units and how the position of main stress and unstress can change the meaning of a speech unit; and the awareness of pronunciation features of natural speech. We will also work on aspects of pronunciation related to students’ first language, such as specific transfer issues from e.g. Chinese/German/Spanish/etc. We will also briefly examine some of the different varieties of spoken English (including US Englishes, British Englishes, etc.).
