additional remarks | Extreme conditions physics In condensed matter physics, external tuning parameters are a powerful tool to vary the groundstate of a system and investigate its properties. In this lecture, we will discuss how extreme conditions such as low temperature, high pressure and strong magnetic field are used as external tuning parameters to study current topics in solid state physics. A substantial part of the lecture will deal with the technical aspects of how extreme conditions are produced in the laboratory. 1) Low temperature Low temperature techniques Cryostats Thermometry Phase transitions Quantum phase transitions Superconductivity and magnetism 2) High pressure Pressure cells Measurement of high pressure Pressure-induced phase transitions Quantum phase transitions 3) High magnetic field Static magnets Pulsed magnets Measurement of magnetic fields Measurement techniques in high magnetic fields Quantum effects: Quantum oscillations Quantum Hall effect |
