Classroom Teaching and Exams Canceled Due to Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and the Disease COVID-19

In order to curb the spread of coronavirus, the Bavarian State Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts has announced that with immediate effect and, at present, until 19 April 2020, teaching in classroom form is to be suspended and the number of examinations to be held will be severely restricted. In general TUM internal exams are canceled.

You may find more information on the TUM website.

Restricted Operations, no On-Campus Teaching

Due to the coronavirus crisis all courses requiring on-campus attendance are canceled with immediate effect, at present, until 19 April 2020.

The TUM Board of Management has ordered the university to place its operations under restrictions as of 6 pm on Wednesday, 18 March 2020 at least until 17 April 2020. Access to all building including the Physics Department is limited to persons working in system-critical areas. All other staff working from home. Hence you can only contact advising services, departmental administrative offices, and other units via email and very limited via phone (make prior arrangements). Events like conferences or workshops are prohibited.

Exams Canceled

In addition, from now until April 19, 2020, all university physics exams (written and oral) have been canceled.

Please understand that you will soon come across old examination coordinates on the usual communication platforms (TUMonline, websites, etc.). In particular, we would like to ask you not to inquire about this. Of course, we endeavor to adjust the data situation as quickly as possible.

It is not yet possible to say when and in what form the exams are to be taken. Since the instructions of the ministry apply until April 19, 2020, we assume that canceled exams can only be repeated after this date. The new exam dates will be announced sufficiently in advance (at least 14 days ahead of the new exam date).

With regard to academic progress checks, canceled examinations will be considered the result of circumstances beyond the students' control.

In particular:

  • Until the exams are repeated, no studies will be terminated due to failing the Fundamentals and Orientation Exams (GOP).
  • The study progress control at the end of WS19 / 20 is suspended, i.e. no student will be de-registered due to this regulation. We will decide which measures are to be taken later in individual cases, also in the context of the specific repetition options.

Thesis Submission via Postal Mail

Submission of Bachelor's or Master's Theses can currently be done via mail. Check the remarks on this at the respective status page (Access for Students with current B.Sc. Thesis or Access for Students with current research phase in a Physics Master's program) and after uploading the digital copy.

If due to this conditions you cannot meet your deadline, please contact study@ph.tum.de. You can assume that, if necessary, extensions for the period of the "lockouts" (in addition to the "standard quota") will be approved without any problems.

Master Application for WS 2020/1

Deadline for application for WS 2020/1 in our Master's programs were extended to 2020-06-30.

Courses during SS 2020

The lectures of summer semester 2020 start at 2020-04-20 as planned. But since we expect that even after 2020-04-20 a normal face-to-face teaching will not be possible immediately all leturers currently prepare to offer the courses online. Information on the precise implementation of online teaching will be published by the lecturers using the links on the courses' detail page in TUMonline.

Courses which require face-to-face presence like lab courses need to be postponed till face-to-face teaching will be possible again.
