Coronavirus : Current information on studies, teaching and exams (rom 17 February 2022: “3G rule”))

In view of the dynamics of the current situation, we refer to the relevant information on the TUM website and restrict ourselves to a few specific instructions from the Faculty of Physics . In order to identify changes quickly, the date of the last change is added to the individual paragraphs.

The basic information can be found on the TUM website:

No "3G Rule" from 3rd of April 2022 (as of 1.4.2022)

With entry into force of the the 16th Bavarian Infection Protection Measures Ordinance starting from 3rd of April 2022 the "3G rule" is no longer applicable. Access to TUM buildings, on-campus courses and exams is no longer limited to vaccinated/recovered/tested.

Pending further information on the extension of the mask requirement, we urgently and emphatically recommend the use of FFP2 masks on all TUM premises where the minimum distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained.

From 17 February 2022: “3G rule”: Access to TUM buildings, on-campus courses and exams only for students who are vaccinated, recovered or can provide a negative PCR or rapid test result (as of 15.02.2022)

More details via TUM Coronavirus/COVID-19: Studies, Teaching and Exams

As of now for exams the 3G rule applies (vaccinated, recovered or negatively tested) (as of 25.01.2022)

From now on, the 3G rule (previously: 3G-plus) applies in exams at TUM. I.e. exams are accessible for vaccinated, recovered or tested persons. Those who are not fully vaccinated or are not recovered must present either a negative rapid test (maximum 24 hours old) or a negative PCR test (maximum 48 hours old).

As of now, students and visitors need to be either vaccinated or recovered. Critical information in brief (as of 25.11.2021)

  • “2G rule”: Access to TUM buildings and on-campus courses only for persons who are vaccinated or recovered, no exception for lab courses (only exception are students, who prove by medical certificate, that they cannot get vaccinated – these students may participate with "3G-Plus status" i.e. a negative PCR test result not older than 48 hours).
  • “3G-Plus rule” for exams: Participation is only possible for persons who are vaccinated, recovered or can provide a negative PCR-Test result.
  • Examination deadlines: study progress checks are extended in winter semester 2021/22
  • There will be no automatic compulsory registration for examinations in winter semester 2021/22.

Examinations you take will be counted as regular assessments. If you register for an exam, but do not take part, it will count as failed.

Details via TUM Coronavirus/COVID-19: Studies, Teaching and Exams

The “Corona traffic light” (Corona-Ampel) in Bavaria is set to "yellow"(as of 08.11.2021)

This means that the following regulations apply to the Bavarian TUM locations (incl. libraries and archives):

  • Extended mask mandate: instead of a medical surgical mask, an FFP2 mask must be worn again.
  • 3G regulation: in contrast to other areas of life, a negative rapid test continues to be sufficient for 3G detection in the university. This means that only persons who have been vaccinated or have recovered or who can provide a negative rapid test (not older than 24 hours) are allowed to enter the TUM buildings, use learning areas or participate in courses. A PCR test is not necessary.

A negative rapid test remains valid in the university area even at Corona traffic light level "red". There are currently no plans to tighten this rule.

All other protective and hygienic measures remain unchanged and are described in the handouts

Faculty of Physics: Return to on campus teaching and learning in WS21/22 (as of 27.09.2021)

The Faculty of Physics offers on campus studies and teaching in the winter semester 2021/22 ( return to presence). The framework for safe studies is the hygiene and safety concept of the TUM. Keywords include the 3G rule, mandatory masks, distance requirement and contact data collection. The details can be found on the pages TUM Coronavirus/COVID-19: Study, teaching and examinations.

In connection with the 3G rule, we refer in particular to the vaccination offers for students at TUM.

On-Campus Teaching and Self-Tests (as of 17.6.2021)

According to the 13th BayIfSMV on-campus teaching is possible again with the usual precautions.

Students who want to participate in on-campus teaching may pick up SARS-CoV2 tests for self-application at the Dean's Office. This way you can test yourself before coming to the campus for te course.

New repeat exams in SS 2021 (as of 20.4.2021)

The exams with many participants directly after the lecture period of winter term 2020/1 that were cancelled due to the guidelines of the TUM Board of Management (especially the GOP part 1 exams) will probably be done around Ascension Day/Pentecost. We plan that the lecturers of the second semester courses reduce the level of new material just before the GOP repeat exams to support exam preparation. The new exam dates were published in TUMonline and take place from 17th till 27th of May.

Cancellation of exams with many participants (as of 30.01.2021)

Due to new guidelines of the TUM Board of Management concerning exams directly after the lecture period of winter term 2020/1, exams scheduled until mid-March with many participants in the same room have to be cancelled or postponed.

Especially based on the principle of equality (between different years as well) the Physics examination board does not approve any change of examination type. Hence in genral online exams are not an option.

In particular, the first exams of the GOP in B.Sc. Physics and the basic exams in M.Sc. Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics will be cancelled. The examination dates planned as second dates in late March/early April will thus become first dates; a second date will be offered in SS 2021.

Whether a single exam can take place depends on various parameters (especially the number of candidates). Therefore, please check the TUMonline announcements of the exams. If you are registered for an exam that is cancelled or postponed, you will be informed via TUMonline. The registration in such a canceled exam will be evaluated with "Q recognized withdrawal" and thus will not be counted as an atempt, you will not have any disadvantage in terms of examination regulations due to the registration or cancellation.

Extension of examination deadlines due to the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the winter semester 2020/2021 (as of: 22.01.2021)

Please always refer first to the detailed explanations on the global pages of the TUM regarding studies, teaching and examinations. In addition, we discuss here some specific aspects of our study programs that we repeatedly encounter in your inquiries:

Compulsory modules QST/BEMP: All students who are enrolled in the winter semester 2020/21 and are not on leave of absence will automatically receive an extension of the standard duration of study at the end of the winter semester (analogous to the summer semester 2020). This means you have (one more) semester longer to meet your deadlines and/or successfully complete your studies. This also applies to passing one of the two compulsory modules. According to your study regulations, you must have passed one of the two compulsory modules by the end of the second semester. This hurdle is also shifted backwards: by two semesters for students enrolled in the summer semester 2020, and by one semester for students enrolled in the winter semester 2020/21.

Whether you have completed one of the two compulsory modules will therefore only be checked for all after the winter semester 2021/22. It is therefore possible to take relevant examinations (again) in winter semester 21/22.

Study progress: students in higher semesters who are on a collision course with the study progress regulation can apply the following simple statement to assess their situation: Students who are enrolled in WS20/21 can also enroll or re-enroll for SS2021 without prejudice. Also note that deadline extensions granted globally in Corona times remain in effect even after the crisis has been overcome.

Standard period of study/BAFöG: As for the summer semester 2020, an extended individual standard period of study has been decided for the winter semester 2020/21 in order to automatically achieve a maximum BAföG entitlement period extended by one additional semester. You will find a corresponding confirmation on your matriculation certificate, which you can download in TUMonline under Printouts for students.

GOP Physics: First of all, you should familiarize yourself with the usual regulations of the GOP Physics. In particular, you will also find an explanation of how and when missed exams (illness, etc.) can or must be made up.

In the winter semester 2020/21 there is no compulsory registration for exams due to Corona. Rather, you must/can register explicitly. Examinations for which you register will be counted as regular. This also applies if you register but then do not participate. In this case, an exam will be considered failed unless you can justify your absence (see "Recognized Withdrawal").

When making your decision, please note that compulsory exams not taken in WS20/21 can only be made up at the end of WS21/22 (or must be made up, in the case of compulsory registration being re-established at that time). In principle, we strongly recommend that you take the courses and examinations offered in the winter semester 2020/21. Keep in mind that the modules in summer 2021 (your second semester) will reference knowledge acquired in the first semester modules.

Winter Semester 2020/1 (as of August 8, 2020)

The lecturing period of winter semesters 2020/1 will start at 2nd of November 2020 and last until 12th of February 2021. In total this is two weeks less than usual! The Prep-Course for New Bachelor Students will start 12th of October 2020.

If possible courses will be offered on-campus – supplemented by online offers. On-campus teaching is especially likely for smaller courses (exercises in small groups, seminars, special courses with smaller audiences). Exercises for first-year students will be prioritized here. In any case, however, you must be present towards the end of the semester in order to take our exams on campus.

Confirmation for Applicants

You can download a corresponding confirmation that your presence on campus is required from TUMonline (see "Can I enter Germany for my studies?" at tum.de). As soon as you have submitted an online application, you will find a confirmation of registration for submission to the authorities in the application area of your TUMonline account. This document confirms that individual formats can take place on campus in the winter semester 2020/21.

Confirmation for Students

A confirmation that you need to be present on campus can be obtained via e-mail at study@ph.tum.de. Please provide your Matrikel number.
