Ulrich Stimming has been full professor for Technical Physics at Physik-Department (E19) up to his retirement in 2011. A main topic of his research concerns electrochemical problems and energy research, especially in the field of fuel cells and electrocatalysis. Besides his activities as professor at TUM, he also served as scientific director of Bayerisches Zentrum für Angewandte Energieforschung (ZAE Bayern, the Bavarian Center for Energy Research) and director of TUM’s Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (NanoTUM). Furthermore he initiated TUM.Energy, now part of the Munich School of Engineering at TUM.

Since 2001 Ulrich Stimming has been editor of the journal “Fuel Cells – From Fundamentals to Systems”. His research led to more than 300 publications, numerous doctoral theses and patents. His scientific work has been awarded with two international prizes: The “Hellmuth Fischer Medal” of the DECHEMA Society for Chemical Technology and Biotechnology and the “Electrochimica Acta Gold Medal” of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), that also appointed him as “ISE Fellow”.

He remains active during his formal retirement: as guest professor at the University of Yamanashi, Japan, at the Nangyang Technological University, Singapore, and at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China. Moreover he is co-director of the “Joint Institute for Advanced Power Sources (IAPS)” at the Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. From October 2011 to the end of 2012 he served as CEO of TUM CREATE in Singapore. 2013 he became “Master” of the De Tao Academy, Beijing, China.
