Further Information

Courses are together with exams the building blocks for modules. Please keep in mind that information on the contents, learning outcomes and, especially examination conditions are given on the module level only – see section "Assignment to Modules" above.

additional remarks Current NDT procedures for quality assurance and inspection of building materials, components and structures as well as their typical applications are studied. In the lectures, illustrative examples and damage cases from the construction industry are presented, including methods for quality assurance of cement-based materials as well as of metals (reinforcement), wood, stone and fiber composite materials (e.g. CFRP and GFRP). In addition, the essentials of traditional and modern NDT test methods and devices are presented (including ultrasound, impact echo, infrared thermography, RADAR, vibration and acoustic emission analysis), as well as their accuracy, limits for application and the corresponding evaluation methods. In addition to inspection procedures, methods for long-term structural monitoring are also covered. In the exercises, students become familiar with the operation of the equipment and devices used in most NDT methods and independently conduct tests and evaluate them. Detailed content: 1. Introduction: Background, Historical, Motivation for testing of structures; Inspection plan (Signals, Systems, Filters, Time series) 2. Basics of vibration and waves; wave propagation 3. Measurement techniques, sensors, recording signals and analysis 4. Ultrasonic testing 5. Impact-Echo 6. Infrared-Thermography for structural evaluation 7. Locating reinforcement und structural damage using Radar 8. Other handheld NDT procedures 9. Vibration analysis for long-term monitoring 10. Acoustic Emission Analysis 11. Monitoring of Structures: Recent examples of damage in structures (Bad Reichenhall and its consequences) and long-term monitoring of cultural heritage structures
