The properties of materials at the nanoscale can be fundamentally different from the corresponding bulk materials. For instance, optical, electric, mechanical, and chemical properties of nanoparticles are to a large extent determined by the geometry. This very fact renders nanotechnology so interesting, versatile, and seminal, but also so challenging. The aim of this course is to introduce methods and approaches to fabricate and characterize structures, where the characteristic lengths in one, two, or three dimension are below 100 nm. Typical examples include heteroepitaxy, carbon nanostructures (fullerenes, nanotubes & graphene), and nanoparticles. Moreover, the unique properties of these systems are discussed, including a repetition of the required physics and chemistry. |
