additional remarks In this course we will examine the ways in which language influences and shapes our understanding of societal norms and cultural conventions, with an emphasis on the legitimisation of power structures. We will discuss several fields of discourse analysis (DA), including critical discourse analysis. We will also discuss quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as the intersection of DA with other linguistic fields, such as sociolinguistics, discursive psychology and conversation analysis. Some topics which will be covered include the MeToo movement, the disparities in the UK media coverage of Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, and the language used by politicians when discussing Covid-19. If you're interested in the intersection of culture, power, politics and language, welcome!
