additional remarks The aim of this course is to introduce students to the theory of the electrode-electrolyte interfaces and their application in characterizing different materials for energy devices. The course is highly interactive and will begin with a discussion session encompassing basic electrochemical concepts and surface characterization. Students will become familiar with using a potentiostat for the investigation of electrochemical cells, starting with standard electrode materials and moving on to novel materials. The discussion will include the basic principles of electrode-electrolyte interfaces for different materials and will give students a theoretical background in electrochemical and optical characterization techniques. Students will then move on to experimentation. The laboratory segment of this course will offer students hands-on experience in techniques such as electrode modification, electrochemical cleaning, galvanization, characterization and data evaluation. The work in the laboratory will allow them to experience the state-of-the-art measurement techniques that researchers employ in the fields of surface science and electrochemistry (e.g. contact angle device, laser interferometer, and potentiostat). After this experimental phase, students will devote some time to data evaluation and analysis. A tutor will assist the students in creating a data analysis plan that will allow for quantitative evaluation and accurate interpretation of results. Subsequent to the data analysis, each student will produce their own report. This report will be written in proper research paper format, enabling students to familiarize themselves with the requirements of scientific papers of a high enough standard to be published. At the end of the course, each student will give an oral presentation. Each presentation will be scheduled for one hour, consisting of 25 minutes of presentation, 20 minutes of open discussion, and 15 minutes of private feedback. These seminars will help to improve the students' presentation and scientific discussion skills. The seminar is designed so that students will learn how to share knowledge with other scientists and students, how to develop scientific communication skills, how to present scientific research findings, and how to offer effective visualizations of data in presentations. Course topics: • Introduction of electrochemical concepts: electrochemical cell, mass transfer, electrode potentials, electrodes materials, electrolyte solution. • Surface modification (e.g. galvanization, electrochemical etching) • Metal deposition and dissolution • Amperometry • Impedance spectroscopy • Fit impedance data to equivalent circuits • Cyclic voltammetry • Microelectrodes • Surface characterization (metrology) and 3D profilometer • Data presentation • Lab report
