additional remarks Statistics comprises mathematical methods for the description, modeling and analysis of data sets. In this context statistical inference refers to conclusions about an unknown distribution based on one or several observations from a known population - the sample. It includes the choice of suitable (parametric) distributional models. In this module we discuss the choice of such models, their properties and the estimation of unknown parameters using the method of moments or the maximum likelihood method. Apart from point estimations for the unknown parameter we also consider interval estimators. The adequacy of a general model will then be examined via hypothesis testing. In the course we will examine general properties of statistical tests but also specific tests as examples. Furthermore, as an example for modeling a target variable by means of another explanatory variable, we discuss the simple linear regression model. Many topics and examples will be illustrated using the statistical software R. The lecture forms the basis for all further statistical courses.
