additional remarks In this course, students gain proficiency in German as a foreign language, including intercultural, sociocultural and academic aspects, at an advanced level of the written language. Students increase their ability to function in the foreign language without great effort and largely fluently by working with more complexly structured and challenging audio and reading material, including scientific texts on current topics in fields, such as ecology, economy and sociology. They refine their ability to differentiate between types of texts and writing styles, to identify implicitly formulated opinions and to examine modern literary texts following a prescribed interpretive method. They practice analyzing, producing well-structured summaries of and detailed critiques of texts both inside and outside their fields of study. They practice gathering detailed information from speeches, lectures, reports, etc. They learn to differentiate the nuances of meaning in related expressions and to understand a wide range of figures of speech. They develop a differentiated repertoire of means of expression on a broad spectrum of current topics and popular scientific questions that goes far beyond standard language. They focus on specific forms of grammar, including various forms of nominalization, nominal style, text coherency, various forms of indirect speech, variants of word formation and the role of the pronoun “es”. Students challenge different positions in public discourse, including their cultural specificity. Students examine selected aspects of culture and cultural life in Germany.
