Further Information

Courses are together with exams the building blocks for modules. Please keep in mind that information on the contents, learning outcomes and, especially examination conditions are given on the module level only – see section "Assignment to Modules" above.

additional remarks The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge on fundamental and advanced topics covering the physics and the technology behind the application of radiation to industry, research and medicine. The module introduces the students to a wide variety of uses of radioactivity and radioactive isotopes which are important for industrial, research and medical applications. The main topics covered include: • Radiation sources and their interaction with matter. • Sources of Radiation and Radiation Detection. • Principles of radiation protection and shielding. • Biological effects of radiation. • Medical applications of radiation (diagnostic tools, radiopharmaceuticals, cancer treatment methodologies such as traditional beam therapy),IMRT, brachytherapy, neutron capture therapy and proton therapy). • Industrial applications of radiation (radiation gauges, radio chemistry and tracer techniques, radioisotope batteries, polymerization, sterilization, etc.) • Applications in research of radiation (dating by nuclear methods, applications in environmental and life sciences, etc.) Visits to some facilities are also planned if time and availability permit.
