Increasing international recognition of the Physik-Department
Times Higher Education ranks world universities in physical sciences

TUM is evaluated among Germany’s top three universities, which managed to score among the world’s top 50 (along with LMU Munich and Heidelberg University). This excellent result helped TUM as a whole to jump to rank 53, up from rank 98 last year.
The THE World University Rankings of the British publication “Times Higher Education” are the only global performance tables which judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. Times Higher Education surveys scholars worldwide about the reputation of universities. In addition, it seeks out data such as the number of publications per scholar, citations per publication, staff-to-student ratio, and third-party research funding, as well as measures of internationalization.
As pointed out in THE World University Ranking Johannes Barth, dean of the physics department, attributes the good performance to the long-term practice of its department philosophy. This has led to “agile and effective subunits within the department which allow cooperative decision-making and efficient action. Our department structure created the optimal basis for participation in research networks, national and international projects and last but not least in Germany’s Excellence Initiative,” he said.
“For many years the department of physics has fostered a stringent and unique talent development. The idea of constant change and the achievement of excellence in research and teaching is rooted in the daily life of the department and provides continuously high attractiveness and visibility.”
