New Collaborative Research Centre at the Physics Department
CRC “Neutrinos and Dark Matter in Astro- and Particle Physics”
2016-11-21 – News from the Physics Department
The focus of the new collaborative research centre 1258 “Neutrinos and Dark Matter in Astro- and Particle Physics (NDM)” is research on neutrinos and of dark matter. Apart from photons, neutrinos are the most abundant particles of the universe. But how do these neutral particles contribute to cosmic dynamics at galactic or even larger distances?
It is also an open question, whether neutrinos are identical to their own anti-particles or whether they have so-called ‘sterile’ partners. The answer to this question could explain, why the universe contains much more matter than anti-matter.
The new CRC will be intimately related to the excellence cluster “Origin and Structure of the Universe”, that is also hosted by TUM. Elisa Resconi furthermore plays a significant role at the international IceCube Neutrino Observatory, that studies cosmic neutrinos interacting with the ice sheet at the south pole.
TUM’s physicists are joined in their research efforts by members of the Max Planck institutes for physics, astrophysics and extraterrestrial physics, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Institute of High Energy Physics (HEPHY) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
