Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

In the course of globalization, companies of almost all industries and sizes are internationally active and have to include the international dimension in their strategic considerations. International Management skills are not only important in the management of companies that are doing business across borders, but also within single business functions the international dimension has to be taken into account. In detail, this module discusses the following aspects:
- Foundations of management
- International dimension of management
- Globalization
- International market entry
- International business strategies

Learning Outcome

Upon successful completion, students are able to understand and reproduce fundamental knowledge about the management of multinational enterprises. Furthermore, students are able to explain and apply theories, models and methods related to international management as well as strategies of multinational enterprises. Further, students are able to identify and analyze challenges and problems in multinational enterprises respectively; they are able to develop and outline solution approaches by applying theoretical concepts.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module part consists of an interactive lecture; in the lecture, the most important concepts, approaches, theories, and empirical studies in the field of international management are introduced and discussed. Practical examples and case studies serve to illustrate the relevant theories and methods. Moreover, students are encouraged to engage in individual exercises and small group assignments in order to look deeper into the course contents. Finally, the self-study of literature is part of the whole module.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The examination consists of a written, graded exam (60 min). The exam consists of single choice questions; resources such as books, course slides, personal notes, etc. are not allowed to answer the questions. In the exam students have to show their ability to reproduce fundamental knowledge about international management by answering questions about theories, models and methods related to international management as well as strategies of multinational enterprises. The exam also assesses students' ability to understand the fundamentals of management as well as to identify and analyze challenges and problems of multinational firms because they will answer questions related to management concepts, stakeholder management, finance, market entry of firms, etc.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
