Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

This module expands and deepens students' knowledge of Italian as a foreign language, enabling them to express themselves in verbal and written form on a range of topics from everyday activities and career to the politics and culture in contemporary Italy. Students gain insight into contemporary Italian society and reflect on Italian socio-cultural issues on the basis of current material including newspaper articles, videos, recorded materials, etc. Selected language structures will be reviewed and supplemented to reinforce students' verbal and written skills. Vocabulary will be expanded.

Learning Outcome

After successful completion of this module, students will be able to understand complex spoken and written texts pertaining to current and cultural issues in the Italian media, to summarize and report about them. They are also able to formulate their own opinions on these subjects.

Preconditions

Sound knowledge of module B1.1 or equivalent; placement test level B1.2.

Learning and Teaching Methods

Learning is based on a pragmatic, communicative approach, which encourages in particular communicative competence through role playing. The inclusion of intercultural aspects gives students an awareness of cultural differences, enabling them to communicate appropriately in specific situations. Special exercises improve reading, writing and speaking skills. The module requires individual, partner and group work and includes Elearning.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

Written examination (60 minutes, mono-lingual Italian dictionary permitted); active and regular class participation throughout the semester.
