Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

In this module, students expand their basic knowledge of French lexis and grammar for simple oral and written for every-day communication situations. They learn, for example, to pose questions to others about themselves and their families and to answer similar questions, to make arrangements as well as reservations in hotels, to report on free time and holiday activities, to describe past events and habits. Grammar covered will include: Passé Composé, Futur proche, quantities, possessive pronouns, direct and indirect object pronouns. Strategies will be taught enabling students with minimal language skills to successfully manage basic everyday situations. Moreover, opportunities will be made available to more effectively organize the learning process of French as a foreign language and to improve the ability to learn.

Learning Outcome

The module is aimed at level A1 "Elementary Language Use" of the CEFR. Students gain basic knowledge of French as a foreign language with a general language orientation while taking into consideration intercultural and cultural aspects. After completion of this module, students will be able to use and understand everyday expressions and very simple sentences. They can interact in a simple fashion, provided that their counterpart speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help; they can write short, simple reports in French using fixed phrases.

Preconditions

Sound knowledge of level A1.1; placement test result A1.2.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module consists of a seminar in which course objectives will be achieved in an activity-oriented, communicative atmosphere through listening, reading, writing and speaking exercises in individual, partner and group work. Language skills conveyed in the classroom are reinforced through the use of guided self-learning in the form of prepared (online) materials.
