Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


In this module, students gain knowledge of German as a foreign language, enabling them to communicate verbally and in writing using a wide and varied vocabulary and complex grammatical structures. The thematic focus of the seminar is the metropole, Munich. Students will critically examine selected aspects of the city such as its history, economic development, social and cultural life, architecture and leisure culture. They gain insights into historical and cultural contexts, enabling them to develop a differentiated picture of the city in which they are studying and, often, only live on a temporary basis. Students engage the topic not only on the basis of texts, audio and film materials, presentations and exercises within the classroom but also through "talking tours" of the city and its museums.

Learning Outcome

Students expand their knowledge of German as a foreign language in selected areas of grammar and vocabulary at level B2/C1 of the CEFR. Students can report and talk about topics relating to the history, everyday and cultural life of the city, Munich, in clearly related, nearly fluent verbal exchange. They can take a clearly-structured position in writing on given topics, using complex sentence structures and a varied vocabulary, largely free of error. They can identify and interpret most important information from authentic texts, including literature, audio and film material. Students gain insights into the historical and contemporary manifestations of the metropole, Munich, which serve to deepen their understanding and foster their independent examination of the topics explored in the seminar.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module consists of a seminar in which students work independently and collaboratively, in teams and on projects, on assigned topics. Course objectives will be achieved through specific listening, reading and writing exercises and presentations in individual, partner and group work, as well as through museum visits and city tours with accompanying assignments.
