Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
Content
In this module, students gain basic knowledge of German as a foreign language, enabling them with minimal language skills to successfully manage such basic everyday situations as shopping, eating in a restaurant, using public transportation, etc. They learn/practice fundamental vocabulary concerning family, career, leisure, numbers; they gain understanding of prices, of using money and telling time, and can talk about their day-to-day activities in the present and perfect tenses using simple sentence structures; simple forms of negation; to differentiate basic article and case forms; the use of modal verbs, the imperative and selected prepositions. Opportunities will be made available for effective, self-motivated, independent learning.
Learning Outcome
The module refers to level A1 of the CEFR. Students gain basic knowledge of German as a foreign language with general language orientation while taking into consideration intercultural and cultural aspects. Students acquire teamwork skills through collaborative work in multinational mixed groups. After completion of this module, students will have acquired knowledge of everyday expressions and simple sentences aimed at fulfilling the concrete needs of everyday life. Students will be able to ask and answer questions about themselves and their families, describe day-to-day activities in past and present tense, briefly describe themselves in writing, make appointments and successfully communicate their wants and needs in basic day-to-day situations, such as while shopping or in restaurants, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Learning and Teaching Methods
The module consists of a seminar in which course objectives will be achieved in an activity-oriented, communicative atmosphere through listening, reading, writing and speaking exercises in individual, partner and group work. The fundamental language skills conveyed in the classroom are reinforced through the use of guided self-learning in the form of prepared (online) materials covering fundamental grammar and communication patterns in the foreign language.
