Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

In this module, students will increase their ability to function in the foreign language without great effort and largely fluently by working with more complexly-structured and challenging listening and reading texts on topics of general interest. They learn to differentiate between types of texts and writing styles, to identify implicitly formulated opinions and to examine modern literary texts following a prescribed interpretive method. They practice analyzing, summarizing and critiquing texts both inside and outside their fields of study and gathering detailed information from longer speeches, lectures, reports, etc. They learn to differentiate the nuances of meaning in related expressions and to understand figures of speech. They develop a differentiated repertoire of means of expression on a broad spectrum of current topics and popular scientific questions that goes beyond standard language. They work with selected grammatical phenomena such as prepositional phrases, participial constructions, the attributive, modal particles and conjunctions. Students critically examine positions within public discourse, including their cultural specificity. They deal with selected aspects of culture and cultural life in Germany.

Learning Outcome

The module refers to level C1 Proficient Language Use of the CEFR. Students acquire knowledge of German as a foreign language at a high written-language level with a focus on intercultural, cultural and academic areas. They can understand the content of complex articles and reports, even outside their own specialist areas and areas of interest independently and frequently without strain and identify points of view. They are capable of interpreting a contemporary prose text and can follow current television reports, most films and plays, even when idiomatic language is used. Students can follow longer discussions and lectures on contemporary topics, as well as specialist lectures inside and outside their fields, provided that speakers enunciate clearly. They are able to take detailed and logical positions on current topics in science and social life, as well as to compose longer presentations in their fields of study and correctly use specialized vocabulary. They can lecture or present on topics in their areas of interest or fields of study in clearly structured, understandable and academically appropriate fashion.
