Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


Our health depends on our genetic makeup, diet, physical activity and risk factors such as smoking. All of us have questions and opinions in relation to this and also industry is developing new products from pro-biotic yogurts to fitness sensors. But is all that is written and developed based on sound scientific evidence? Is precision medicine just hype, should we change to a Paleo diet, is HIIT training and natural running really the best we can do for our bodies? In this modules we will explore such topics. They will be introduced by a lecture and we follow up with a seminar that contains paper interpretations, debates, presentations and so on.

Learning Outcome

The aim of this module is to enable students to:
- Follow a whole module in English as English is the main language of science
- To explain scientific topics related to health based on scientific evidence but with simple language
- Debate current health sciences topics and to answer commonly asked questions
- Know the scientific basis of current diets and foods
- Know the scientific basis of exercise strategies for health

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module consists of 2 parts: one 1 h lecture and one 2 h seminar. The function of the lecture is to introduce a specific health-related topic. The content of the seminar are problem solving exercises, student presentations and debates.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The module is assessed through a scientific essay assessment (75% of total mark) and a scientific poster (25% of total mark). The scientific essay assessment comprises three 1500 word scientific essays on essay questions.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
