Content

The aim of the “World of Engineering” module is to provide the students with a broad overview of current research topics and trends in engineering in the areas of energy, aerospace, medical technology, electrotechnology, construction, etc. through guest lectures and excursions. This gives students detailed insight into potential areas of activity, professional profiles, and career paths in the engineering sciences and into interfaces with the applied sciences.

Learning Outcome

Following successful participation in the module, the students are capable of identifying links between theoretical-methodological content and engineering practice. They have an initial overview of current research trends and the spectrum of activities within the profession of engineering, and can apply this knowledge gainfully in the planning of their further studies and career. The contents of the lecture series also help the students to analyze current and future developments in engineering and to make a basic assessment of their potential.

Learning and Teaching Methods

In order for the participants to obtain an overview of current research trends and engineering practice and the accompanying activities, teaching is carried out through lectures presented by actors from industry and research related to engineering. At the end of the lectures the content is discussed orally and considered by the students and staff members present. As an alternative to the lectures, the students have the option of attending excursions to industrial and research facilities.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The module’s learning outcomes are demonstrated in the form of a report with a pass/fail credit requirement, which is assessed as “passed” or “failed”.
The content of the report is based on attendance at a minimum of 8 lectures in the MSE’s series “World of Engineering” or selected lecture series by other faculties. Recognized lecture series are published in the form of an overview on the Engineering course website, which is updated each semester (https://www.engineering.mse.tum.de/aktuell/ringvorlesung/) and in the Moodle course for the MINT (STEM) program. As an alternative to the lectures, the students can also participate in the excursions offered as part of the MINT (STEM) program and compile the report on the basis of the excursion content. One excursion is equivalent to one lecture.
In their reports, the participants link theoretical content with engineering and scientific practice and are required to incorporate their own experiences and reflections on various areas of application. Selected content from the lectures will be discussed and assessed based on the theoretical knowledge gained during the orientation semester. This will test whether the students are capable of establishing a link between the content of study and teaching provided and between practical engineering and scientific application. Through their own reflections and assessments, the students show that they will also be able to apply this knowledge in their future studies and career planning.
