Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

  • Six experiments carried out in groups
    - oral introduction interview,
    - measurements and writing of the measurement report
  • Data analysis
  • Error analysis
  • Writing of reports
  • Oral discussion of the experiment and the results for three of the experiments
  • Topics: Optics, atom and molecular physics

Learning Outcome

After passing the module the student is able to apply the procedure of basic physics experiments, the fundamentals in writing scientific reports and the basics of error calculation, and to understand the connections between the experiments and the theory.

After passing the module the students are able to apply the procedure of basic physics experiments in optics atomphysics and nuclear physics, the fundamentals in writing scientific reports and the basics of error calculation, and to understand the connections between the experiments and the theory. They can apply the principles of data analysis both by hand and with the help of software tools.

Preconditions

PH0001, PH0002, PH0003, PH0009, PH0010 (recommended)

Courses, Learning and Teaching Methods and Literature

Courses and Schedule

Learning and Teaching Methods

Students have to carry out six experiments with the given instructions. The data analysis and a report is made at home. In case of questions or problems there is are tutors for guidance.

Media

  • lab experiments
  • manual und electronic data acquisition

Literature

  • Intructions to the experiments (online available)
  • Standard textbooks for Experimental physics (Mechanics und Thermodynamics)
  • W. Walcher, Praktikum der Physik, Vieweg+Teubner Verlag

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The learning outcome is tested continuously during the 6 lab course experiments.

For the evaluation of the experimental ability the lab books are used. Criteria can be the completeness of the taken measurements and the choice of the data range.

With the reports the ability of writing a scientific text is evaluated. Criteria are e.g. the formal structure and the way of reasoning. On the basis of the presented results presented, it the understanding of the data analysis and the knowledge of error calculation are evaluated.

In the final discussions with the students, the understanding of the correlation of theory and experiment is evaluated. For example, the ideas underlying the experiment, or the advantages and disadvantages of the experimental setup compared to alternative setups and methods can be asked,

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
