Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

Realisation of six physics-experiments (out of eight experiments) from various topics in physics:

  1. mechanics
  2. electrical measurement
  3. magnetism
  4. optics
  5. nuclear physics

Learning Outcome

After passing the module the student is able to:

  1. prepare for a physics experiment self-dependently
  2. carry out physics experiments systematically
  3. master the measurement techniques necessary for the experiment
  4. write a lab report meeting the requirements of scientific work
  5. handle experimental data and analyse the results
  6. comprehend and analyse the physics fundamentals and correlations

Preconditions

Courses, Learning and Teaching Methods and Literature

Courses and Schedule

Learning and Teaching Methods

The lab course is carried out in groups of 2 students at prepared experimental setups. A supervisor is permanently present for assistance at any experiment.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

Students have to pass six physics-experiments (out of eight experiments) successfully. An experiment has been passed if the following elements are all carried out successfully:

  • in advance short written test about the fundamentals of the experiment
  • realisation of the experiment according to the lab course manual
  • documentation of experimental data and analysis of the results

Thus students show that they are able to do self-dependent a physics-experiment and to gain useful experimental data.

In addition the student has to show in three short discussions with the supervisor belonging to three of the six performed experiments (at the student's own option) that she / he understands the experimental data and realises the context to the physics topic.
