Responsible coordinator of the module PH2268 in the version of SS 2018 was Danny van Dyk.

Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The students will learn about

- the CKM paradigm and unitarity of the flavour mixing matrix;

- flavour changing processes in the SM any beyond, for transitions |Delta B| = 1 and |Delta B| = 2;

- meson mixing in the B-meson and kaon systems;

- experimental aspects of flavour physics, with the mechanism behind B factories as an example;

- introduction to two effective field theories relevant for B decays (Weak Effective Theory, Heavy Quark Effective Theory)

Learning Outcome

After successful completion of the module the students are able to:

  1. research topics within the field of flavour physics as part of their master thesis.

Preconditions

- basic knowledge of quantum field theory

Learning and Teaching Methods

In the lectures the building blocks of flavour physics are presented. The lectures will further present phenomenological applications of these building blocks at the hand of examples from B- and kaon-physics. In the bi-weekly exercises, the understanding will be deepened by explicitly deriving some of the exemplary results on B-physics presented in the lectures.
