Responsible coordinator of the module PH2243 in the version of WS 2016/7 was Elena Hassinger.
Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
In condensed matter physics, external tuning parameters are a powerful tool to vary the groundstate of a system and investigate its properties. In this lecture, we will discuss how extreme conditions such as low temperature, high pressure and strong magnetic field are used as external tuning parameters to study current topics in solid state physics. A substantial part of the lecture will deal with the technical aspects of how extreme conditions are produced in the laboratory.
1) Low temperature
- Low temperature techniques
- Phase transitions
- Quantum phase transitions
- Superconductivity and magnetism
2) High pressure
- Pressure cells
- Measurement of high pressure
- Pressure-induced phase transitions
- Quantum phase transitions
3) High magnetic field
- Static magnets
- Pulsed magnets
- Measurement of magnetic fields
- Measurement techniques in high magnetic fields
- Quantum effects:
- Quantum oscillations
- Quantum Hall effect
After the successful participation at the module, the participants will be familiar with current topics in condensed matter physics that are studied using extreme conditions. The participants will understand and know how extreme conditions are used to tackle the open physical questions. The students will also know how extreme conditions, that is low temperatures, high pressures and high magnetic fields are technically realized and measured. The students should be able to evaluate, which techniques are useful in which situation..

Description of exams and course work
In a written exam of 60 minutes the learning outcome is tested using comprehension questions and sample problems.
In accordance with §12 (8) APSO the exam can be done as an oral exam. In this case the time duration is 25 minutes.
