Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The standard model of strong and electroweak interactions provides an accurate description of the data of all current particle physics experiments. Yet the existance of dark matter in the universe indicates the incompleteness of the standard model. In order to study the limitations of the standard model and its necessary extensions experiments at new particle physics accelarators are needed.

The lecture starts with a brief summary of the standard model to explain the open questions in particle physics and to show how future experiments can help to solve these questions. Two examples for future hadron collider physics experiments will be discussed in detail: the upgraded ATLAS and CMS experiments at the high-luminosity (HL) LHC which will be put into operation in 2016 and concepts for experiments for a new hadron collider, the so-called future circular collider (FCC) where protons would be collided at ten times the centre of mass energy of the HL-LHC. The lecture will focus on the technological challenges of both projects and the currently discussed technologies.

Learning Outcome

- Basic principles of quantum field theories.

- The standard model of strong and electroweak interactions as an example of a gauge field theory.

- Limitations and extensions of the standard model.

- Hadron colliders.

- Detector technologies for experiments at hadron colliders.

Preconditions

No preconditions in addition to the requirements for the Master’s program in Physics.

Courses, Learning and Teaching Methods and Literature

Courses and Schedule

Learning and Teaching Methods

The main focus of the lecture is on basic principles which drive the structure of a particle detector at a particle accelerator and the methods which are used for the statistical analysis of experimental data. In the lecture the principles will be explained in detail and illustrated with examples of running and future experiments.

Media

Use of the black board and the projector. Lecture notes will be provided.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

There will be an oral exam of 30 minutes duration. Therein the achievement of the competencies given in section learning outcome is tested exemplarily at least to the given cognition level using comprehension questions and application examples.

For example an assignment in the exam might be: How do particles interact with matter? How is this used in particle detection?

In the exam no learning aids are permitted.

Remarks on associated module exams

The exam for this module can be taken together with the exam to the associated follow-up module PH2247: Konzepte für zukünftige Hadroncolliderexperimente 2 / Concepts for Future Hadron Collider Experiments 2 after the follwoing semester. In this case you need to register for both exams in the following semester.

Exam Repetition

The exam may be repeated at the end of the semester.

Current exam dates

Currently TUMonline lists the following exam dates. In addition to the general information above please refer to the current information given during the course.
