NMR Imaging
Module PH2149
Basic Information
PH2149 is a semester module in German or English language at Master’s level which is offered in summer semester.
This module description is valid to WS 2014/5.
If not stated otherwise for export to a non-physics program the student workload is given in the following table.
Total workload | Contact hours | Credits (ECTS) |
---|---|---|
150 h | 40 h | 5 CP |
Responsible coordinator of the module PH2149 is Axel Haase.
Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
Content
This module provides an introduction to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging. First the history of NMR imaging will be briefly summarized and the status of imaging applications in medicine and sciences will be presented. The course will explain modern methods of NMR imaging and will describe the instruments and technical details of imaging units. With the knowledge on NMR relaxation times, diffusion, chemical shift, etc., techniques will be presented which influence the image contrast, the measuring time and the spatial resolution.
Learning Outcome
After successful participation, the student will be able to
- describe the basic setup of an NMR imaging instrument
- understand and explain the concepts of modern NMR imaging techniques
- understand NMR imaging experiments and propose methods to change the NMR image contrast
Preconditions
Lecture on NMR basics (PH2148 Grundlagen der NMR - Introduction to NMR). No additional special requirements that exceed the admission requirements for the MSc program

Module Exam
Description of exams and course work
In an oral exam the learning outcome is tested using comprehension questions and sample problems.
In accordance with §12 (8) APSO the exam can be done as a written test. In this case the time duration is 60 minutes.
Exam Repetition
The exam may be repeated at the end of the semester.
