Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


Theory of General Relativity (GR): tensor calculus, basics of GR; motion of test particles; linearized field equations; gravitational waves

Astrophysical sources: binary systems; merging neutronen stars and black holes; core-collapse supernovae

Gravitational wave detectors: interferometric detectors; resonant bar detectors

Learning Outcome

After successful participation in this module the student is able to: 1. to comprehend and explain the basic principles of and the formalism used in General Relativity; 2. to understand the working principles of gravitational wave detectors; 3. to name and explain the most important astrophysical sources of gravitational waves;

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

In an oral exam the learning outcome is tested using comprehension questions and sample problems.

In accordance with §12 (8) APSO the exam can be done as a written test. In this case the time duration is 60 minutes.

Exam Repetition

The exam may be repeated at the end of the semester.
