Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

Magnetic resonance is at the heart of many established techniques, ranging from protein structure analysis to medical imaging. The emergence of quantum technology could trigger a revolution in this field of research. Quantum sensors for magnetisation promise access to much smaller samples, down to single molecules and spins. Quantum control can be used to deterministically initialize spins, in order to enhance polarisation and signal strength in conventional spectroscopy. Thanks to these novel techniques, completely new applications shift into reach, ranging from hyperpolarisation in medical imaging to detection of dark matter in basic research.

This interdisciplinary seminar will provide an overview of this young and dynamic field of research. Every student is expected to acquire expert knowledge in one specific part of the field from research literature and to present his/her insights in a talk. The seminar is an interdisciplinary class, jointly organized by groups from the physics and chemistry departments.

Possible topics include

 * NV centers, optomechanics etc. as novel NMR detectors

 * Hyperpolarisation by electrons, photons and chemical reactions

 * NMR-Spektroscopy and imaging on microscopic samples, such as single cells and single molecules

 * NMR concepts for novel measurements in particle physics and medecine

Learning Outcome

After successful participation in the module the student can use the basic methods of literature retrieval, condense their knowlegde from scientific papers into a presentation and obtain presentation skills.

They have learned about recent topics in the field of research.

Description of exams and course work

In the course of the seminar each student individually prepares a talk on a topic of current research. Based on this talk the learning outcome is tested.
