Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


The detection of photons with energies of less than 1 eV (infrared light) to more than 10^15 eV (gamma-rays) will be covered. State of the art detectors will be described from vacuum devices (PMT, MCP, HPD) to gaseous (MWPC, GEM) and solid state photon detectors (PIN diode, APD, SiPM, CCD). Some applications in biomedical physics, high energy physics and astrophysics will be presented. In addition one of the basic properties of the detectors, the so-called excess noise factor, will be measured in a laboratory with a simple setup.

Learning Outcome

After successful participation in the module the student can
use the basic methods of literature retrieval, condense their knowlegde from scientific papers into a presentation and obtain presentation skills.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The learning outcomes of this module will be developed through the literature search, the study of literature, the preparation of the presentation, the discussion with the teacher, the talk itself and answering questions about it.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

In the course of the seminar each student individually prepares a talk on a topic of current research. Based on this talk the learning outcome is tested.
