Module PH1363

This module handbook serves to describe contents, learning outcome, methods and examination type as well as linking to current dates for courses and module examination in the respective sections.

Basic Information

PH1363 is a semester module in English or German language at Master’s level which is offered in winter semester.

This Module is included in the following catalogues within the study programs in physics.

  • Catalogue of student seminars for nuclear, particle, and astrophysics
  • Catalogue of student seminars for Biophysics
  • Catalogue of student seminars for Applied and Engineering Physics

If not stated otherwise for export to a non-physics program the student workload is given in the following table.

Responsible coordinator of the module PH1363 is Franz Pfeiffer.

Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The detection of photons with energies of less than 1 eV (infrared light) to more than 10^15 eV (gamma-rays) will be covered. State of the art detectors will be described from vacuum devices (PMT, MCP, HPD) to gaseous (MWPC, GEM) and solid state photon detectors (PIN diode, APD, SiPM, CCD). Some applications in biomedical physics, high energy physics and astrophysics will be presented. In addition one of the basic properties of the detectors, the so-called excess noise factor, will be measured in a laboratory with a simple setup.

Detectortypes
1. PMT
2. MAPMT
3. MCP-PMT
4. HPD, HAPD
5. Photosensitive gas detectors (MWPC / MPGD)
6. PIN diode
7. CCD and MAPS
8. APD
9. G-APD / SiPM

Applications
1. Readout of scintillators / fibres with PMT/MAPMT
2. Ultrafast timing for TOF with MCP-PMT
3. Readout of RICH detectors with HPD
4. Readout of RICH detector with gas-based detectors
5. Calorimeter with PIN diodes
6. X-ray detectors with diodes
7. Readout of inorganic crystals with APD
8. Readout of scintillators with G-APD

Learning Outcome

After successful participation in the module the student can
use the basic methods of literature retrieval, condense their knowlegde from scientific papers into a presentation and obtain presentation skills.
They have learned about relevant topics in the field photon detectors.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The learning outcomes of this module will be developed through the literature search, the study of literature, the preparation of the presentation, the discussion with the teacher, the talk itself and answering questions about it.

Media

Presentation materials, complementary literature

Literature

Specialized literature to the individual topics of the seminar talks will be provided;

own literature search.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

In the course of the seminar each student individually prepares a talk on a topic of current research. Based on this talk the learning outcome is tested.
