Soft Matter Physics
Module PH1325
Basic Information
PH1325 is a semester module in German or English language at Master’s level which is offered every semester.
This Module is included in the following catalogues within the study programs in physics.
- Catalogue of student seminars for condensed matter physics
- Catalogue of student seminars for Applied and Engineering Physics
If not stated otherwise for export to a non-physics program the student workload is given in the following table.
Total workload | Contact hours | Credits (ECTS) |
---|---|---|
120 h | 30 h | 4 CP |
Responsible coordinator of the module PH1325 is Peter Müller-Buschbaum.
Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
Content
The term "soft matter" desvribes various materials such as polymers, liquid crystals, biopolymers, colloids, etc. The seminar will cover the basic physics of some of these materials which is presented by the students in talks and discussions. Topics include: introduction to the world of polymers, self-cleaning surfaces, switchable polymer brushes, block copolymers as templates for nanotechnology, polymer-metal composites, conductive polymers, polymeric nanostructures for photovoltaics, polymer adhesives, biopolymers nanostructures, nanocomposites of polymer and carbon nanotubes switchable polymers. The student makes a literature search and discusses the contents of the talk with the supervisor. The seminar considers the students a lecture of 45 minutes length. The content of the paper is discussed, and the students should be able to answer the questions of the other seminar participants.
Learning Outcome
After successful participation in the module the student have earned these skills:
(1) to conduct a literature search in scientific journals and on the Internet (2) to find scientific publications on the Internet, (3) to bring the content of the publications in the form of lectures, (4) to present a lecture will present, (5) to discuss critically the content of the other lectures and (6) to understand the basic physics of soft matter.
Preconditions
keine Vorkenntnisse, die über die Zulassungsvoraussetzungen zum Masterstudium hinausgehen
