Basic Information
PH1317 is a semester module in German or English language at Master’s level which is offered every semester.
This Module is included in the following catalogues within the study programs in physics.
- Catalogue of student seminars for condensed matter physics
- Catalogue of student seminars for Applied and Engineering Physics
If not stated otherwise for export to a non-physics program the student workload is given in the following table.
Total workload | Contact hours | Credits (ECTS) |
---|---|---|
120 h | 30 h | 4 CP |
Responsible coordinator of the module PH1317 is Bastian Märkisch.
Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
Content
Neutrons are widely used to investigate systems in very diverse research fields like material design, energy materials, superconductors, geo sciences, cultural heritage, biology, particle physics and fundamental research. Neutron methods have unique properties and are complementary to other methods. In this seminar, we discuss contemporary research and methods with neutrons relevant to science and industry.
Learning Outcome
After successful participation in the module the student can use the basic methods of literature retrieval, condense their knowledge from scientific papers into a presentation and obtained presentation skills.
They have learned about recent topics in the field of research with neutrons in industry and science.
Preconditions
Student is familiar with solid state physics

Learning and Teaching Methods
Preparation and presentation of a scientific talk, beamer presentation, board work, advisor discussion, literature studies
Media
Presentation materials, complementary literature, internet
Literature
Specialized literature to the individual topics of the seminar talks will be provided
own literature search
Module Exam
Description of exams and course work
In the course of the seminar each student individually prepares a talk of about 30 minutes on a topic of current research and actively participates in the discussion about all the talks in the seminar. Hence participation in essentially all dates of the seminar is expected. Based on the individual talk the learning outcome is tested.
Aspects of evaluation are especially:
- Illustrative and clear presentation of a topical research field within a scientific talk
- Answering questions on the scientific content of the talk
Exam Repetition
There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
Current exam dates
Currently TUMonline lists the following exam dates. In addition to the general information above please refer to the current information given during the course.
