Responsible coordinator of the module PH1081 in the version of WS 2011/2 was the Dean of Studies at Physics Department.

Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

The Master's thesis is part of the research phase in which the students work on a current question in the field of condensed matter physics. Possible topics are based on the research foci of the Department of Physics and the special offer of the professors. Topics are e.g. nanomaterials and nanotechnologies, magnetism and spin phenomena, semiconductor physics, energy materials, physics of soft matter, physics of correlated systems, surface and interface physics, quantum technologies, correlated quantum dynamics or multi-particle phenomena. Both experimental and theoretical topics are possible, ranging from the physical basics to physical issues in manufacturing and measurement processes.

In the first half of the research phase the students have become familiar with the current state of research in their chosen field and have planned a project for the master thesis.

In the master thesis they apply the acquired knowledge and realise the project. In the written elaboration, the methods chosen for the project and the results obtained are described on the basis of the current state of research and discussed in the context of the thematic field.

Learning Outcome

After passing the Master's thesis, the students are able

to independently work on a question from the field of physics of condensed matter within a given period according to scientific methods under guidance and to summarize it in a scientific paper,

apply learned theoretical and/or experimental background knowledge to the given problem in order to obtain results on the problem,

analyse their own scientific results and classify them with regard to their significance in the subject area.

Courses, Learning and Teaching Methods and Literature

Learning and Teaching Methods

Guidance on scientific work, independent study of literature, realisation of a scientific project, independent performance of scientific experiments or theoretical calculations, discussion of the results with the supervisor and members of the working group, writing the thesis.

Depending on the specific focus of the topic, all conceivable forms of media can be used.

Current scientific publications on the specific topic - detailed information from the respective supervisor

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

A scientific project will be carried out within a period of 6 months and presented in a scientific thesis. Two university teachers evaluate the work. Formal and contentwise evaluation points may be

  • the content structure of the work

  • the thematic introduction and the presentation of the current state of research

  • the correct description of the theoretical basics

  • the description of the own procedure

  • the description of scientific results of work

  • the presentation of own achievements in relation to preparatory work

  • the quality of the scientific discussion of the results

  • the selection and quality of the figures

  • the linguistic quality of the work

  • the selection and completeness of references

  • the contribution of own scientific ideas

  • Independence in the work execution

A repetition of the Master´s thesis is possible according to the relevant regulations of the FPSO.
