Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The Master's Thesis is part of the research phase in which the students work on a current question in the field of condensed matter physics. Possible topics are based on the research foci of the Physics Department and the special offer of the professors. Topics are e.g. nanomaterials and nanotechnologies, magnetism and spin phenomena, semiconductor physics, energy materials, physics of soft matter, physics of correlated systems, surface and interface physics, quantum technologies, correlated quantum dynamics or multi-particle phenomena. Both experimental and theoretical topics are possible, ranging from the physical basics to physical issues in manufacturing and measurement processes.

In the Master's thesis, the students apply the knowledge acquired during their studies. The Master's Thesis includes the carrying-out of experiments or simulations/calculations and the written presentation of the results on the basis of a scientific elaboration.

In the written elaboration, the methods chosen for the project and the results obtained are described and discussed in the context of the subject area based on the current state of research.

Learning Outcome

After passing the Master's thesis, the students are able

  1. to independently work on a question from the field of physics of condensed matter within a given period according to scientific methods under guidance and to summarize it in a scientific paper,
  2. apply learned theoretical and/or experimental background knowledge to the given problem in order to obtain results on the problem,
  3. analyse their own scientific results and classify them with regard to their significance in the subject area.

Preconditions

Admission requirements for the module are the passed modules PH1061 and PH1071 and the certificate of mentor counseling.

Learning and Teaching Methods

Students study a scientific topic independently, i.e. they carry out scientific experiments or theoretical calculations, evaluate the results independently, carry out literature research and summarise this in a written paper at the end. They receive the necessary support by regular discussions with the supervisor and other members of the working group.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The module Master's Thesis includes the practical and/or theoretical study of a scientific topic with a resulting scientific elaboration. The scientific elaboration includes

  • a theoretical part based on a literature search,
  • the carrying out of the experiments or the simulations/calculations,
  • the analysis of the conducted experiments or simulations / calculations
  • the classification and discussion of the results within the scope of the subject area.

The students show that they are able to examine a scientific topic independently and to classify their own results in the context of the subject.

A repetition of the Master´s thesis is possible according to the relevant regulations of the FPSO.
