Master's Work Experience (QST)
Module PH1076
Basic Information
PH1076 is a semester module in English language at Master’s level which is offered every semester.
If not stated otherwise for export to a non-physics program the student workload is given in the following table.
Total workload | Contact hours | Credits (ECTS) |
---|---|---|
450 h | 150 h | 15 CP |
Responsible coordinator of the module PH1076 is the Dean of Studies at Physics Department.
Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
Content
This module is part of the research phase, in which students work on a current problem in the field of quantum science and technology (QST). Possible topics are based on the research focus of the departments, schools or groups participating in the Quantum Science and Technology Master's program. Topics include experimental and theoretical work on quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum cryptography, quantum simulation, quantum sensing, quantum metrology, and quantum materials.
This module offers students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with experimental or theoretical/computational methods specific to the subject area in which they plan to write their Master's thesis. In the case of experimental topics, these methods include specific experimental preparation and measurement methods as well as methods for data evaluation. For theoretical topics, analytic or numerical/computational methods are involved.
Learning Outcome
After completing the module the student is able to:
-
Apply the theoretical and/or experimental methods required for the chosen topic.
-
Analyze, evaluate and discuss the results obtained with these methods.
Preconditions
All module requirements listed in the acceptance letter for the Quantum Science and Technology Master's program must have been met. Recommendation: at least 40 credits points from the modules of the first and second semester of the Quantum Science & Technology Master's program should have been successfully completed.

Learning and Teaching Methods
The module consists of participation in specific experimental or theoretical research tasks within the working environment of a specific research group. The students learn methods specific to their chosen research area, via independent literature studies and via discussions with their supervisor and other members of their research group.
Media
research experiments, computers, specific software, simulations
Literature
Books, research and review papers on a specific research topic – relevant information is provided by the supervisor.
Module Exam
Description of exams and course work
Students write a report (typically 5-30 pages, pass/fail credit requirement), demonstrating their ability to understand, apply and discuss topic-specific methods and results.
Exam Repetition
The exam may be repeated at the end of the semester. There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
