Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The Master's training is part of the research phase in which the students work on a current topic in the field of biomedical engineering and medical physics. Possible areas of research are based on the main research areas of the Department of Physics and the Munich School of BioEngineering, as well as the special offer of the professors. Topics are e.g. imaging (x-ray imaging, MRI, opto-accustic imaging,...), biosensors (lab on chip,...), radiation therapy, nuclear medicine or data processing in medicine.

The Master's training serves the learning of special subject-specific methods, which are necessary for the realisation of a Master's thesis in the field of biomedical engineering and medical physics. For experimental topics, these are usually specific preparation and measurement skills as well as methods for data evaluation. For theoretically oriented topics, students learn the necessary analytical and numerical methods that are necessary for research work in the corresponding focus area.

Learning Outcome

After successful completion of the module the students are able to:

  • Apply the theoretical and/or experimental methods  required for the chosen topic.
  • Analyse, evaluate and discuss the results obtained with these methods.

Preconditions

All the additional module requirements that are specified in the letter of admission to the Master's programme in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics must have been met.

It is recommended that at least 40 ECTS from the modules of the specialization phase in the Master's programme Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics have been successfully completed.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module consists of participation in the working world of a research group dealing with experimental or theoretical topics. The students learn their special subject-specific methods, which are deepened in supervisor discussions, in discussions and in independent literature studies.

Media

Books, research and review papers on a specific research topic.

Literature

Current scientific publications on the specific topic - detailed information from the respective supervisor.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

Students write a report (typically 5-30 pages, pass/fail credit requirement), demonstrating their ability to understand, apply and discuss topic-specific methods and results.

Exam Repetition

The exam may be repeated at the end of the semester. There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
