Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
The Master's training is part of the research phase in which the students work on a current topic in the field of physics of nuclear-, particle- and astrophysics. Possible areas of research are based on the main research areas of the Department of Physics and the special offer of the professors. Topics are e.g. astro- and astroparticle physics, experimental nuclear physics, experimental particle physics, theoretical particle and high-energy physics, fundamental plasma physics and many more. Both experimental and theoretical topics are possible, ranging from the physical basics to applied issues in detector engineering and measurement processes.
The Master's training serves the learning of special subject-specific methods, which are necessary for the realisation of a Master's thesis in the field of nuclear-, particle- and astrophysics. For experimental topics, these are usually specific preparation and measurement skills as well as methods for data evaluation. For theoretically oriented topics, students learn the necessary analytical and numerical methods that are necessary for research work in the corresponding focus area.
After the Master's Work Experience students are able to
- apply the theoretical or experimental methods needed for the chosen research area
- to analyse, evaluate and discuss the results of these methods
Admission to the module requires that all additional module requirements that are specified in the letter of admission to the Master's programme in Physics (Physics of Condensed Matter) have been met.
It is recommended that at least 40 ECTS from the modules of the specialization phase in the Master's programme Physics (Physics of Condensed Matter) have been successfully completed.

Learning and Teaching Methods
The module consists of participation in the working world of a research group dealing with experimental or theoretical topics. The students learn their special subject-specific methods, which are deepened in supervisor discussions, in discussions and in independent literature studies. Within the framework of the supervisor interviews, a project plan for the intended Master's thesis will be elaborated and a project outline drawn up.

Description of exams and course work
The module will take the form of an ungraded academic achievement. Students show in the daily use of the technical tools (experiments/software/simulations) as well as through discussions of the progress with the supervisor that they understand the contects and can apply the methods. In a final discussion with the supervisor it will be checked whether the project planned for the master thesis makes sense and is feasible.
If both points are fulfilled, the module is passed.
The exam may be repeated at the end of the semester.
