Master's Seminar (BEMP)

Module PH1065

This module handbook serves to describe contents, learning outcome, methods and examination type as well as linking to current dates for courses and module examination in the respective sections.

Basic Information

PH1065 is a semester module in English language at Master’s level which is offered every semester.

If not stated otherwise for export to a non-physics program the student workload is given in the following table.

Responsible coordinator of the module PH1065 is Julia Herzen.

Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The Master's seminar is part of the research phase in which the students work on a current topic in the field of biomedical engineering and medical physics. Possible areas of research are based on the main research areas of the Department of Physics and the Munich School of BioEngineering, as well as the special offer of the professors. Topics are e.g. imaging (x-ray imaging, MRI, opto-accustic imaging,...), biosensors (lab on chip,...), radiation therapy, nuclear medicine or data processing in medicine.

The Master's seminar is an induction to the area in which the students want to write their Master's thesis. It provides a deepening of the knowledge within the scope of a further professional specialization. The students get an overview of the current state of research in the selected topic area.

Learning Outcome

After successful completion of the module the students are able to:

  •  Understand the current state of art of the research in a limited field of medical physics.
  •  Evaluate the status of the topic  of the intended Master's thesis in the chosen field of research,
  •  to analyse different methods from its research area and their possibilities (advantages and disadvantages).

Preconditions

All additional module requirements that are specified in the letter of admission to the Master's program in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics must have been met.

It is recommended that at least 40 ECTS from the modules of the specialization phase in the Master's programme Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics have been successfully completed.

Learning and Teaching Methods

A major part of the Master's seminar is spent on independent literature studies, in particular current scientific publications. On the basis of literature named and made available to them by their supervisor, they also do their own literature research. At the same time, students are involved in a research group, which gives them the opportunity to discuss directly with their supervisor or with other members of the research group and clarify any questions of understanding that arise .
The current work of the students is presented and discussed in the weekly group seminar.

Media

Supplementary literature, scientific publications, presentations and discussions.

Literature

Current scientific publications on the specific topic - detailed information from the respective supervisor.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

Students give an oral presentation followed by a discussion (30 minutes in total), demonstrating their ability to understand and classify the current state of research in the chosen subject area. The exam is taken as a pass/fail credit requirement

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
